Christmas movies

The other day I happened upon The Holiday. It’s a movie I like because it’s not sappy, sentimental. You kind of have to suspend belief that the woman that is in Titanic is playing someone so frumpy. But for all the of the characters (well maybe not Jude Law’s) it’s about the transition, them learning about themselves. My favourite scene is where Amanda is at the grocery store buying a lot of wine and junk food and the cashier says “having a party are we?” and she answers “oh yeah”. It’s a sweet movie but you get to the end wondering ok how is this going to work out with people that live in England and LA? That’s the point of holiday movies you are supposed to imagine them all living happily ever after.
Most of the hallmark movies have the same premise. Girl hates boy, they end up stranded somewhere for 3 days and by the end they fall madly in love. What the heck? And sometimes the girl is even engaged which is worse! There is a really sweet movie with Cameron Mathysen (not sure if I spelled that right) and this young woman who has an accident and loses her memory. I know it’s far fetched but it’s about her bringing the Christmas magic back to his family (he’s a widower). Honestly I think he has chemistry with anyone. There is another good one with the young woman from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It’s more about the family we create for ourselves than romantic love.
